Washington State University GEAR UP

The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) program is federally funded by the US Department of Education. One Vision Partnership IV (OVP IV) and Harvest of Hope IV (HOH IV) are GEAR UP programs that are administered by Washington State University Tri-Cities. These (OVP IV & HOH IV) grants were approved in 2017 & 2016, and funded for seven years each.

These GEAR UP programs provide services and support to all Classes of 2022 & some 2023 (HOH IV) students and Classes of 2023 & some 2024 (OVP IV) in our partner schools to prepare for and succeed in high school, higher education, and their future. Student services offered include the following (and many more):

  • Academic Support
  • Preparation for College Level Coursework
  • Preparation for College Entrance Exams & Requirements
  • Math Tutoring for any level
  • Career & College Counseling
  • Campus Visits to colleges, universities, and technical colleges
  • Tutoring
  • College Financial Planning & Financial Literacy Programs
  • Summer Camps/Programs
  • SAT Preparation and Testing
  • Scholarship Resources & Assistance
  • FAFSA Application Sssistance
  • College Application Assistance

GEAR UP also provides professional development opportunities for teachers and staff to enhance their knowledge and work skills to assist students in pursuing and succeeding in higher education.

The GEAR UP programs offer activities and services to students and their families about the available opportunities for post-secondary education. Family services include:

  • Educational Family Conferences
  • Evening Workshops & Activities
  • Family Financial College Planning
  • Information on Financial Aid
  • Scholarship Opportunities
  • Guidance on College Admissions
  • Assistance with the College Application Process

State Financial Aid for DREAMers

A new state law has expanded eligibility for the Washington State Need Grant to low income, non-citizen students who meet the program's eligibility requirements and also satisfy the residency criteria. Washington State joined California, New Mexico, and Texas by in enacting its own version of the Dream Act which extends state grants to undocumented students.
